MUAY EIREANN AWARDS 2016 – RESULTS

The results were released on Facebook on December 14th.  Thank you to all the coaches who voted, we got an excellent response rate. Thanks for taking the time.

MUAY EIREANN FIGHT OF THE YEAR AWARD
PADDY DOUGLAS (Dublin Thai) vs Wayne Cambridge (Siam Warriors, Cork) – I – 4 June 2016

That was a tight one. A couple of fights in particular seemed to have made a strong impression: Martin Horgan (Siam Warriors) vs Aaron Browne (Lionheart) in Neptune on 22/10, Aaron O’Callaghan (Siam W) vs James O’Connell (Courage) on the same day, some also remembered Barry O’Neill (Spartan) vs Micky O’Grady (Carrigaline), on February 20th…….but (and many people would have expected this) it is Paddy Douglas (Dublin Thai) vs Wayne Cambridge (Siam W) who gave us the fight of the year 2016. It was in Neptune, on June 4th for the ISA+KA Irish Light Middle Weight title. A rematch did happen on 22nd of October but it is the first fight that many found to be the most exciting.
A fight which saw both fighters drop each other with spinning elbows. Paddy coming out on top with a points win but with nasty marks on his legs…..
Well done to both of them. You’re getting one TShirt each. Thank you for giving us the best fight of 2016.

MUAY EIREANN FEMALE OF THE YEAR 2016 AWARD
ELAINE McELLIGOTT (Cork Thai)

Here, as expected, a very tight competition partly due to the fact that even if the overall level of active fighters is increasing in Ireland, the level of active female fighters is still shy. Nonetheless, we have fighters of great quality in Felix Ameeroedien (Origins), Eimear Codd (Valhalla), Elaine McElligott (Cork Thai), only coming back following a short retirement and juniors starting their pro career like Shauna Nicole (Cobra) and Michaella Kelly (Dublin Thai) who are pushing through. All these names appear in the votes.
However, it is without a doubt that, despite her low level of activity this year compared to Eimear Codd, her win over the Valhalla fighter was significant enough to place Elaine Mc Elligott at the top of the food chain this year. A come back is never easy and Elaine did it in style. Well done!

MUAY EIREANN NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR 2016 AWARD
NIALL McGREEVY (Langka, Belfast)

Niall was still fighting amateur in the summer this year. Then he got his first pro fight on his club’s show in Belfast in October. Then he got his first Full Thai Rules the following month. Then he was in the rankings.
There you have it. It is that simple.
Many new names in the votes too (Garrett Smylie, Niall’s stablemate was also mentioned, as were Cian Hurley and Stefan Korodi: interesting category).
Niall deserves this award this year.

MUAY EIREANN MALE FIGHTER OF THE YEAR 2016 AWARD
RYAN SHEEHAN (Siam Warriors)

This is a busy category and the vote was no easy task. Dylan Meagher (Courage), Micky O’Grady (Carrigaline), Daryl Flood (Warriors), James O’Connell (Courage), Craig Coakley (Lionheart), Aaron Browne (Lionheart) were all mentioned but Ryan won with a good difference in the points. Surely the bling counts but Ryan has fundamentally proved himself as a very reliable force who is still showing something more to us at every fight. With CMT, ISKA and now WKA titles, Sheehan, if it wasn’t done already, has entirely cemented his place as the best fighter in his weight category. The one to beat.
Well done Ryan! Great work!

MUAY EIREANN AWARD – OPEN CATEGORY
LIAM McGILL (Eire Muay Siam, Limerick)

We have one more award to give tonight and this is the only vote that is not cast by the coaches. We keep that one for us. We created it to be able to acknowledge the work of people doing something special for Muay Thai: it could be a fighter, a coach, someone working in MT circles…anyone ..
Tonight it’s for a fighter……Liam McGill of Eire Muay Siam (Limerick). Liam is never in a dull contest and gives everything he can in every fight. He has the greatest heart in the business and he is a gent out of the ring.
Thank you for your presence in Irish Muay Thai, Liam.
Great work!
